Winnipeg Jets Sign Hellebuyck - Golden Knights Sign Fleury

Winnipeg Jets sign Connor Hellebuyck to $37 million six-year contract

The Winnipeg Jets have agreed to a $37 million contract that will see Connor Hellebuyck remaining with the franchise for the next six years.

Hellebuyck now joins a list of top goaltenders with substantial contracts, with his hitting the cap of $6.167 million. Hellebuyck played sixty-four games last season and recorded 44 wins. He was a finalist for the Vezina Trophy and is now one of the top six paid goaltenders in the NHL. He joins the likes of Carey Price, Sergei Bobrovsky, Henril Lundqvist, Tuuka Rask and Pekka Rinne.

At 25, Hellebuyck joins four other restricted free agent Winnipeg players that have been signed to extended contracts. This includes Bryan Little, Nilolaj Ehlers and Mark Schiefele. With all four earning salaries north of $5 million, the Jets have only $20 million remaining in cap space for the upcoming season.

The Winnipeg Jets drafted Hellebuyck in 2012 and he became their starting goaltender during last season. He has an average save percentage of .907 and has played 149 games with the Jets. His performance last season helped Winnipeg have their best season to date, and his new salary, a $ million per year increase reflects that.

Vegas Golden Knights Extend Contract with Fleury

The Vegas Golden Knights have signed a contract extension with Marc-Andre Fleury. The extension will see Fleury remain with the Golden Knights for the next three years at a reports $7 million salary per year.

Fleury, who has a year left in his contract, will now remain a Golden Knight through to the 2022 season, and likely will retire with the franchise. Fleury will be 36 once the extension ends, and while young, in terms of his hockey career, the number of years left is fast approaching.

Fleury, was instrumental in helping the Golden Knights go the distance in the playoffs. He was chosen during the expansion draft. In his inaugural season with the Golden Knights, Fleury won twenty-nine games, one of which was his 400th win in his professional hockey career. Statistically, last season was one of his best with a .927 save percentage. In total Fleury has played 737 games and has earned 404 wins.

The day after the Golden Knights’ season ended, Fleury said,

“It was a good season, I think the numbers are something, but they don’t always show the game and stuff, but I think my teammates are a big part of it. They were a big help to me all this season. “

Fleury added that it was a weird as a year ago he was told he was too old, He added,

“I don’t know, it’s weird. A year ago, I was told I was getting too old to play, I still had a lot of fun. Vegas has given me this opportunity to do a lot, I wouldn’t want to go anywhere else, and hopefully I can finish my career here.”

During the playoffs, Marc-Andre appeared in all twenty games played by the Golden Knights. While the Knights eventually lost to the Washington Capitals, theirs was a season for the history books, one that saw this expansion team go to the Stanley Cup finals in their first season.
