McIntosh and Deguchi Grab Team Canada’s First Gold Medals on Monday

Summary:
- Summer McIntosh won gold in women’s 400m IM on Monday after grabbing silver in 400m free on Saturday.
- Christia Deguchi grabbed gold in women’s judo while Rylan Wiens and Nathan Zsombor-Murray won bronze in men’s synchronized 10m diving on the same day.
- Team Canada currently has five medals.
17-year-old Canadian swimming phenom Summer McIntosh claimed her first gold medal on Monday evening in women’s 400m individual medley.
Two days earlier, on Saturday, the opening day of swimming, McIntosh captured a silver medal in 400m free.
Monday brought Team Canada another gold medal through Christia Deguchi who dominated the women’s judo final and bronze via Rylan Wiens and Nathan Zsombor in men’s synchronized 10m diving.
Team Canada currently counts five Olympic medals.
“It’s Always Just About Having Fun”
Commenting on her dominating victory on Monday, McIntosh explained she takes every event
“Very individually” and simply does her work, adding that starting off for her, “getting on the podium — is definitely a great way to start“.
In the first half of the demanding race, the swimmer used the butterfly and backstroke legs to push the pace hard through and leave everyone behind, except for American Katie Grimes.
The Canadian finished the race under her own world-record pace, touching in 4 minutes, 27.71 seconds, which was more than three seconds off the mark of 4:24.38 that she had previously set in May, at the Canadian trials.
However, it was more than the swimmer who competed at the Tokyo Olympics at age 14 needed to conquer the field in the final, stand on top of the podium, and grab the gold medal, which made her “very happy”.
“It’s always just about having fun, as well as pushing my body to its limits“, she added, further explaining all the world competitions she participates in teach her how to handle the events “mentally and physically and emotionally and trying not to get too high or too low“.
McIntosh has no plans to celebrate her big win just yet, as she is now focused on “the 200 fly on day five“. How many medals can McIntosh pick up at Paris 2024, get all the best odds with selection of our bookies.
