Penguins Beat Senators In 2OT To Reach Stanley Cup Final

The Pittsburgh Penguins knew they were going to fight hard in Game 7 of the Eastern Conference Final against the Ottawa Senators if they were to make it to yet another Stanley Cup final.

Both teams had battled hard in the previous 6 games and were tied 3-3 going into Game 7.

Pittsburgh Penguins were the defending champions and also the favourites but there were many who felt the Senators had a strong chance at causing an upset and qualifying for their first Stanley Cup final in nearly a decade.

The Senators put up an amazing performance to give the packed stadium more than their money’s worth.

The teams fought hard all the way through but in the end they were tied at 2-2 which forced overtime. Both teams created a number of chances but some astute defending and good goalkeeping kept the scoreline the same and the game had to go into double time for a result to be forced.

The Penguins had a wealth of experience in crucial final games and they used it in the end to secure the winning goal in the dying moments of the game to give them a 3-2 win over the Senators and in doing so made it to yet another Stanley Cup Final. The Pittsburgh Penguins will now take on the Nashville Predators in the finals which starts on May 30.

The Senators looked terribly disappointed as they were so close but yet so far in the end. A lot of the players walked around in disbelief as the final goal was a cruel setback for them. However they can lift their heads high as throughout the season they put in some unbelievable performances, upset some of the best teams and proved that they have it in them to test the best.

In a statement, Senators captain Erik Karlsson said

I think that we did everything we could in our power and at the end of the day it could've gone either way, but they did it for a little bit longer than we did and a little bit better

The 26 year old Karlsson had a phenomenal season and was one of the main reasons why the Senators have performed so well. He is one of the favourites to win the Norris Trophy and if he does, it would be his third trophy.
