Two More Years: Breakout Debut Brings Oilers Extension to Colton Dach

Summary:

  • Colton Dach has inked a two-year contract extension with the Edmonton Oilers.
  • The extension is valued at an average of $1.2 million per season.
  • The 22-year-old earned the deal after a promising eight-game regular-season stretch with Edmonton.

It wasn’t difficult for the Edmonton Oilers to decide upon keeping promising young forward Colton Dach for at least the upcoming two years, given his impressive NHL debut with the club.

The 22-year-old has officially signed a two-year contract extension averaging around $1.2 million per year, according to the club’s announcement on social media.

Impressive Size, Fresh Energy

Dach arrived in Edmonton earlier this year as part of the trade that brought veteran center Jason Dickinson to the Oilers from the Chicago Blackhawks. While Dickinson was viewed as the centerpiece of the deal, Dach quickly emerged as an intriguing addition with the potential to become a regular contributor.

Standing 6 feet 4 inches and weighing 220 pounds, Dach brought size, physicality and energy to Edmonton’s lineup. Although he appeared in just eight regular season games, he earned increased responsibility and worked his way onto the team’s third line.

His combination of aggressive forechecking and offensive instincts gave the Oilers another physical presence alongside fellow forward Trent Frederic

The two managed to create turnovers, putting pressure on opposing defenses and helping generate scoring opportunities during the closing weeks of the regular season.

Dach’s role became more limited during the Stanley Cup Playoffs as ice time became harder to earn, but the organization seems to be confident in his development is moving in the right direction.

Ready to Prove His Worth

The former second round pick was selected 62nd overall by the Chicago Blackhawks in the 2022 NHL Draft before being included in the offseason trade with Edmonton.

Reports have suggested Chicago’s rebuilding strategy has shifted toward younger prospects selected under the organization’s current management group, making Dach available despite his potential.

For the Oilers, the extension poses a relatively low risk in a player who has already proven that he has what it takes to become an effective middle-six forward.

With another training camp ahead and a full season to compete for a permanent roster spot, Colton Dach will have an opportunity to establish himself as a key piece of Edmonton’s forward group for years to come.
