Historic Low: Senators Stun Rangers While Allowing Just 9 Shots

Summary:
- The Ottawa Senators came out victorious 2-1 against the New York Rangers 2-1, allowing just 9 shots.
- Senators played with only four defensemen after multiple injuries.
- The team’s strong defensive structure continues as they push for playoffs.
The Ottawa Senators edged the New York Rangers 2-1 at Madison Square Garden in the Ice Hockey on Monday night after delivering one of the most disciplined defensive performances in recent NHL history.
Ottawa allowed just nine shots on goal, the lowest total in franchise history. It was also the Rangers’ weakest offensive output since 1955 and the fewest shots recorded by any NHL team in more than 20 years.
Reimer: “It Wasn’t Easy”
“It wasn’t busy, but it wasn’t easy either” said goaltender James Reimer, who made eight saves in the win. “You have to stay sharp even when the puck isn’t coming often”.
The performance became even more impressive considering the Senators were hit by injuries during the game. Thomas Chabot left late in the first period after taking a stick to the arm, while Lassi Thomson exited in the second period with a lower-body issue. That left Ottawa with just four defensemen for more than half the game.
Despite that, the group held firm. Players like Jordan Spence and Tyler Kleven logged heavy minutes and helped keep the Rangers from generating any real pressure.
“It’s a gutsy effort” said Warren Foegele, who scored for Ottawa. “Guys stepped up when we needed it most”.
The Senators were already missing key defenders, making the result even more surprising. Still, the team stuck to its structure and limited space, continuing a trend that has helped them climb back into the playoff race. Since late January, Ottawa has been among the league’s best at limiting shots against.
Miller: “We Got Outplayed”
For the Rangers, it was a frustrating night. Captain J.T. Miller admitted the team simply did not perform. “We got outplayed and outworked. That’s not acceptable”.
Reimer also addressed the mental challenge of gaving to stay focused.
These games can be tougher than facing 30 or 40 shots. You just have to trust yourself and be ready when the moment comes.
In the end, Ottawa’s resilience and defensive discipline made the difference, turning a difficult night into a statement win during the 2025-26 NHL Season .
