Kansas City Royals Fail to Deliver – Blue Jays Win 6-5

Aledmys Diaz high fives Kevin Pillar after he hits a two run homer last night in Kansas.

KANSAS CITY, Missouri. — As the eighth inning was in full swing, it looked like the Royals and Blue Jays were heading towards a loss, that is until Kevin Pillar came to bat and changed that with a two-run homer.

The Toronto Blue Jays were facing down Blaine Boyer, with two outs and only the ninth inning to go, the Jays needed to make something happen. With Diaz on base, Pillar knew the Royals were up to something after catcher Salvador Perez went to the mound – whatever plan was in place, it failed.

After Boyer was sent in at the bottom of the eighth, the first two he faced were sent packing before Boyer walked Diaz. Pillar connected on Boyer’s next pitch and hit a two-run homer that saw Diaz and Pillar both score for the Jays. That put Toronto out front 6-5, and with the Kansas City Royals unable to earn any runs in the ninth, the Blue Jays earned the win.

Commenting on the two-run homer, Pillar said.

“You fall behind, it’s the eighth inning. He probably tells him don’t give me anything to hit, but that’s the beauty of baseball. You’ve still got to execute pitches. The only thing that threw me off a little is after the meeting they kind of shifted their infield back to the right side, so I figured I was probably going to get something away or something soft to see if I would chase. I didn’t overthink the situation. I just told myself to stay ready.”

Blue Jays pitcher Ken Giles pitched a perfect ninth inning to earn the win for the Blue Jays, his first since being traded by Houston in a deal that saw Roberto Osuna heading to the Texas club at the end of July. Kansas has a strong showing in the seventh with both Jorge Bonifacio and Salvador Pérez had back-to-back doubles leading to the Royals going out in front of the Jays 5-4.

Speaking on his successful outing last night Mondesi said,

“That’s the way I play the game.I just got to keep working hard and keep doing my thing, so I can go out and show the fans what they want to see.”

The Kansas City Royals have had a poor outing in the last 12 games having lost 10 of those and is sitting in last place in the Central Division. Toronto is in third place in the East division with 54 wins, 65 losses and has a .454 average.
