Roberto Osuna Traded to Houston Astros for Ken Giles and Future Prospects

Roberto Osuna has been traded to the Houston Astros in a deal for Ken Giles

Toronto Blue Jay Roberto Osuna is now a Houston Astro after a trade that saw Osuna sent to the Astros in exchange for Ken Giles and a future pitching prospect.

Osuna, who is coming off a 75 game suspension will be able to pitch for the Astros starting on August 5th, but the Astro’s want Osuna to explain himself to understand better the reasons relating to his domestic abuse issues, and ultimately what led the 23-year-old pitcher to be suspended in the first place.

For Justin Verlander, a pitcher with the Houston Astros said he feels the situation is a tough one adding,

“It’s a tough situation. I think the thing for us to remember here is that the details haven’t come to light. We don’t know the whole story. Obviously, I’ve said some pretty inflammatory things about stuff like this in the past, and I stand by my words.

Verlander also stated that with a case that is on-going, they will have to wait and see what takes place. He further said, “It will be interesting. I think he plans to talk to us when he gets here and we’ll go from there and see what happens.”

Osuna will head to Houston later this week after pitching his last game with the Blue Jays later this week. The trade, which was confirmed one day before the deadline, also saw the Astro’s sending Hector Perez and David Paulino to the Toronto Blue Jays.

Currently, Houston is sitting in first place of the American League West but have lost the last four games. They are slated to start a three-game series against the Seattle Mariners this weekend. The Texas franchise has been busy this week with shuffling its roaster picking up Ryan Pressly from the Minnesota Twins.

The last game Osuna pitched was on the 6th of May. After assault allegations, the Jays put the pitcher on administrative leave after he was formally charged by Toronto Police.

Several major league players made their feelings on domestic abuse known. This includes Lance McCullers Jr. and Justin Verlander after they commented a leaked video that showed Danry Vasquez, assaulting his girlfriend. Vasquez was a prospect for Houston but was released immediately after the video came to light and his subsequent arrest.

The suspension cost Osuna almost 90 days of pay. That resulted in nearly 50% of his annual salary, or $2,536,022. It also saw his ability to become a free agent extended by a year. Speaking on the trade, Jeff Luhnow, the general manager of the Astor’s said,

“The due diligence by our front office was unprecedented. We are confident that Osuna is remorseful, has wilfully complied with all consequences related to his past behaviour, has proactively engaged in counselling, and will fully comply with our zero-tolerance policy related to abuse of any kind.”

Osuna, for his part, released a statement that read he was thankful to the Astro’s franchise for believing in him and that he will not let them down. As for MBL bettors, the trade was welcome news as it gives hope that the Blue Jays will put this behind them as they focus on the rub up to the World Series.
