John Isner Advances to Miami Open Finals with 3-1, 7-6 win against Juan Martin

John Isner celebrates semi-final win at Miami Open

Yesterday’s men’s semi-final play at the Miami Open saw John Isner taking a step towards winning one of the more respected titles in tennis, the Miami Open after he defeated Juan Martin del Potro in two sets. Isner is hoping he will be the first American since 2010 to win the esteemed Miami Open.

Isner dominated with hard driving baseline strokes and with strong, powerful serves. John Isner is one of the tallest in the sport of tennis today, standing 6 ft., 10 inches tall and towered over Del Potro to win 6-1, 7-6.

Del Potro was on a fifteen match winning streak and was coming off a win at Indian Wells until facing Isner. From all accounts, Del Potro was tired after the hectic schedule of playing a large number of matches in a short period of time, Isner simply said, played better from beginning to end scoring thirteen aces, had not a single deuce point while serving and quickly went into the lead 3-0 against Del Potro.

Isner’s serve is powerful, to say the least, and yesterday’s match saw the American serving six aces in the first four serves, one at 139 mph, during the second set and tiebreaker. Del Potro is seeded 5th in the world and is a favourite for the Miami crowd’s Latin fans, many of whom waved flags in support of their hometown hero, yet the hometown support did little to help against the big serves of Isner.

John Isner is seeded 14th in the world, just one position above Del Potro. While in the top 20 of the world‘s best in Tennis, he is 0-3 in ATP Master. Sunday’s final will see him facing off against Germany’s Alexander Zverev, who was successful in winning against Spain’s Pablo Carreno Busta of Spain.

Caroline Wozniacki Complains of Verbal Abuse and Threats from Crowd

Caroline Wozniacki, winner of this year’s Australian Open, has made claims that her and her attending family had to deal with threats and verbal abuse from the crowds while playing against Monica Puig. Wozniacki lost in her opening match to Puig 0-6, 6-4, 6-4.

Wozniacki posted a statement on her Twitter account claiming that tournament directors failed to take action and stop the abuse. James Blake, the Miami Open director, admitted that the crowd was loud said that officials and security staff were not aware of any threats being made towards the Australian.

Wozniacki official statement on Twitter said the following.

“I lost a tough match to a great opponent and friend Monica Puig. I am fully aware that tennis is a game of wins and losses. However, during the match last night people in the crowd threatened my family, wished death threats on my mom and dad, called me names that I can’t repeat here and told my fiancé’s niece and nephew (who are 10 years old) to sit down and shut … up, meanwhile security and staff did nothing to prevent this and even accepted this to take place.”

Monica Puig hails from South Florida and garners a strong level of support from the Latin population in Florida, whereas Wozniacki, who is from Denmark said she brought her complaints to the attention of the chair umpire but that nothing was done to brings things under control.
