Canada’s women soccer team wanted to strike and not participate in the SheBelieves Cup as they felt Canada Soccer was not being supportive and not giving them equal treatment when compared to the men’s soccer team.
However, they had to withdraw their protest when Canada Soccer informed them that if they decided to boycott the SheBelieves Cup, they would open themselves up to legal action which the Federation was more than willing to pursue.

Canada’s women soccer team yielded to Canada Soccer under the pressure of legal action but used social media to make it clear to everyone that they were going to play in the SheBelieves Cup under protest.
The team made their feelings very obvious as they decided to wear full purple during their opening game against the United States at the Exploria Stadium in Orlando, Florida. They donned purple shirts when they walked onto the pitch for the National Anthem and blocked out the Canada Soccer logo on their backpacks with tape.
Their shirts also displayed the message “Enough is Enough’ to express their frustration and disappointment at the way Canada Soccer was treating them. When the game commenced, they removed their purple shirts but used purple tape on their wrists to continue to show that they were protesting. Canadian Soccer Players Send Message Via The Color Purple
Canadian Players Association released a message on Twitter to make it clear what the women’s team was trying to do.
Tonight, our players will be wearing purple as a symbol of protest. Purple has historically been associated with efforts to achieve gender equality. Considering the current circumstances, our players will continue to wear purple until our association has standards in place that ensure equal treatment and opportunity
Canada’s women soccer team received support from Team USA who joined Team Canada at the center circle before kickoff and formed a heart symbol by joining hands in a show of solidarity.
