No rest for Canada. The under-18 women’s team kept rolling on Monday at the IIHF World Championship in Sydney, defeating Hungary with a clean 14-0 victory and moving to 2-0 in the preliminary round.

Busy Scoreboard

Captain Hayley McDonald and Adrianna Milani led the way with hat tricks, while goaltender Rowan Houweling turned aside all 11 shots she faced to earn the shutout. The Canadians controlled their possession, pace, and territory almost every shift throughout the game.

After opening the tournament with a 9-0 win over Switzerland on Saturday, Canada showed no signs of slowing down.

The hosts outshot Hungary 74-11 and built a 4-0 lead by the end of the first period. By the time the second intermission arrived, the scoreboard read 11-0, leaving little doubt about the outcome.

Megan Mossey had a standout performance, finishing with two goals and two assists. Caileigh Korte, Alida Korte, Sofia Ismael, Rachel Piggott, Madison Levesque, and Kendall Doiron also found the back of the net.

The offense was spread throughout the lineup, with 17 Canadian players recording at least one point. Anais Leprohon, Aurora Matt, and Ismael each contributed three assists, underscoring Canada’s depth and puck movement.

Coach Sunohara: “We Have to Clean That Up”

Despite the convincing scoreline, head coach Vicky Sunohara said the team knows there is still work to do.

There were many positives tonight, but we are a little disappointed with the scoring chances we gave up. We felt like it was a lack of focus, not changing or not tracking back, so we have to clean that up.

Canada now turns its attention to a much tougher test. The team faces unbeaten Sweden on Tuesday afternoon at the Sport and Wellness Centre in Membertou, Nova Scotia. Both teams sit atop Group A with identical 2-0 records, while Switzerland and Hungary are still looking for their first wins.

Sunohara believes her group is well-equipped for the challenge ahead.

We have been focusing a lot oonour defensive play, and we have to be sharper tomorrow (against Sweden). We believe that we have a lot of depth; we have four lines and three sets of defence that can play, and it is showing.

Elsewhere in the hockey tournament, the United States leads Group B at 2-0. Czechia and Slovakia are both 1-1, while Finland has dropped its first two games.
