Canada Begins Home World Cup Journey Seeking Historic First Win

Summary:

  • Canada faces Bosnia and Herzegovina in Toronto in its opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
  • Les Rouges are chasing their first-ever World Cup victory after winless appearances in 1986 and 2022.
  • Injury concerns surrounding Alphonso Davies and Moïse Bombito continue ahead of kickoff.

Canada’s men’s national soccer team is getting ready to make history on Friday, June 12, when it kicks off its 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign in front of a home crowd in Toronto.

Hosting for the First Time

The squad will play the opening Group B match against Bosnia and Herzegovina, marking a landmark moment for Canadian soccer, with the country hosting World Cup matches for the first time and carrying the hopes of fans eager to see the national team secure its first-ever victory at the tournament.

Canada enters the competition from the 30th position in the official FIFA world rankings, significantly ahead of 64th-ranked Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The matchup will bring a valuable opportunity for Les Rouges to finally break through after previous World Cup appearances in 1986 and 2022 ended without a win.

For many players, the occasion feels almost unreal.

It’s honestly surreal“, said Canadian winger Liam Millar, who is preparing for his second World Cup with Canada.

When I was a kid, if I ever thought the World Cup would be here in Canada, I probably would have said no. It’s kind of a surreal moment, especially tsince he first game is here in my hometown. We’re going to be doing everything we can to make Canada proud and doing everything we can to do as well as possible in this tournament.

Nelson: “It’s Amazing, Truly”

The excitement is shared throughout the squad, including forward Jayden Nelson, who earned a late call-up after replacing injured midfielder Marcelo Flores. Nelson made a strong case for selection when he scored in Canada’s recent 2-0 friendly victory over Uzbekistan.

It’s just crazy to know that we’re playing games in our own backyard. It’s just going to give us that extra push with our fans and family here. It’s amazing, truly.

Despite the optimism, Canada heads into the tournament dealing with important injury questions.

Defender Moïse Bombito remains under evaluation as he continues recovering from a surgically repaired tibia. Head coach Jesse Marsch has indicated he is willing to wait until the final deadline before deciding whether a replacement will be needed.

Team captain Alphonso Davies is also racing against time. The Bayern Munich star remains in return-to-play protocol but is expected to feature at some stage during the tournament.

The first game is coming up pretty quickly. We understand how important the first game is, but we understand recovery is always an important thing.

After facing Bosnia and Herzegovina in Toronto, Canada will continue its World Cup campaign with matches against Qatar in Vancouver on June 18 and Switzerland on June 24.

For now, however, all eyes are on Friday’s opener and the chance to create a memorable chapter in Canadian soccer history.
