Swimmer Aurélie Rivard from Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Quebec has won her 12th career Paralympic medal after she came in second at the women’s S10 100-metre freestyle event at Paris La Défense Arena.

“I’m Disappointed Because I Was Looking Forward to Defending My Title“

The 28-year-old, who holds the world record and was a two-time defending champion, clocked a time of 1:00.82. She was just 0.3 seconds behind Emeline Pierre of France who took gold.

This way, she became the first French woman to ever win a Paralympic swimming gold medal since 2012.

Italian Alessia Scortechini came in third and took the bronze medal in 1:01.02.

Speaking after the race, Aurélie Rivard said she was “disappointed” because she was eager to defend her title while explaining she “kind of blacked out in the last 50 metres, so I don’t really know what happened“.

I was really focusing on trying to touch the wall as quickly as possible because I could see the girls next to me, but again it’s hard to be sad while being here and with the crowd, so I’m just looking forward to talking to my team and enjoying again the moment on the podium.

The swimmer who captured gold at the Tokyo Games in 2021 and the world title in Manchester in 2023 added.

Rivard’s Second Medal at This Year’s Paralympics

The accomplishment marks the swimmer’s second medal of these Paralympics, following the bronze she claimed in the S10 50m freestyle on the opening day.

The four-time Paralympian commented on her twelve-year Paralympic career, saying that she “never thought” she “would reach that amount of medals”, a thing “can’t be disappointed about“.

Rivard, who posted the fastest qualifying time earlier in the day with 1:00.41, will be returning to the pool for the 400m freestyle on Wednesday prior to her fourth and final race in the 100 backstroke on Friday.
