Mammoth Take Down Flames 3–1 for Second Straight Home Win

Rasmus Andersson scores only goal in loss against the Utah Mammoth during 2025 NHL Season

Summary:

  • The Calgary Flames lost 3-1 to the Utah Mammoth.
  • JJ Peterka, Barrett Hayton, and Kevin Stenlund scored for Utah; Rasmus Andersson’s power-play goal opened the scoring for the Flames.
  • Calgary’s 19 goals received in their first five games make their minus-9 goal differential the league’s second-worst.

JJ Peterka and Barrett Hayton led the way for the Utah Mammoth on Wednesday night, finding the back of the net in the second period as their side beat the Calgary Flames 3–1 during the 2025 NHL Season

The victory made Utah just the sixth NHL franchise to win each of its first two home openers while also signaling their fourth straight win over Calgary, after sweeping the season series 3–0 last year.

Kevin Stenlund’s empty-netter in the final 30 seconds of the game put the Mammoth up by two and sent the home crowd straight into celebration mode.

Calgary’s defensive struggles continued, as the Flames have now allowed 19 goals in their first five games. Their minus-9 goal differential is the second-worst in the league.

Goalie Devin Cooley, making his first start of the season, finished with 29 saves in the loss. In parallel, Goaltender Karel Vejmelka stopped 19 shots to help secure the win.

Rasmus Andersson opened the scoring for Calgary with a power-play goal midway through the first period.

However, the Flames’ early lead didn’t last long, as Hayton tied it early in the second, snapping a quick shot down the middle to even things up just over a minute in.

A few minutes later, Peterka gave Utah the edge for good. Breaking free on a solo rush, he slipped the puck past Cooley with a clean wrist shot to make it 2–1.

18-3 on Shots for Mammoth

The second period was all Utah. Fueled by six Calgary penalties, the Mammoth outshot the Flames 18–3 and controlled nearly every shift.

Despite the pressure, Utah couldn’t capitalize on the power play, going 0 for 4 in the period and just 1 for 16 on the season. Still, their even-strength play and aggressive forecheck kept Calgary chasing.

Vejmelka didn’t have to stand on his head, but he made the stops he needed to, especially late in the third as Calgary tried to push back. With the net empty and time running down, Stenlund picked off a pass and scored from center ice to put the game away.

Up next, the Flames will head to Vegas on Saturday night while the Mammoth will return home to face San Jose on Friday night.
