Maple Leafs Rally Past Bruins in Thrilling Overtime Comeback

Mitch Marner scores overtime winner vs. Boston Bruins during NHL season 2024

Summary:

  • Maple Leafs defeated the Bruins 5-4 in overtime at TD Garden on Tuesday after overcoming a 3-0 deficit.
  • Marner scored the OT winner in the final minute of regulation.
  • Toronto’s winning streak boosts their Atlantic Division chances, while Boston faces tough decisions ahead of the trade deadline.

On Tuesday night, the Toronto Maple Leafs defeated the Boston Bruins 5-4 in overtime in a dramatic showdown

The Leafs managed to erase a three-goal deficit, with help from Mitch Marner’s clutch performance.

The 27-year-old, born in Markham, sealed the game with his second goal of the night, finding the net in the final moments of overtime to complete the comeback.

Sixth Win in Seven Games

The game did not lack its fair share of shifts in the momentum, with Boston striking first just 29 seconds into the game, when David Pastrnak extended his career-best point streak to 15 games, capitalizing on a breakaway and firing a wrister past Toronto’s goalie Anthony Stolarz.

The Bruins continued to dominate early, adding to their lead with Brad Marchand’s power-play goal before Morgan Geekie made it 3-0 midway through the second period.

Toronto, however, refused to go down quietly. Morgan Reilly got the Leafs on the board before Nicholas Robertson’s third-period wrist shot evened the score at 3-3.

Boston was quick to answer right back, with Pastrnak netting his second goal of the night to put the Bruins ahead once again.

With just 46 seconds remaining in regulation, Pontus Holmberg delivered the equalizer in a scramble near the net, sending the game to overtime.

Toronto had pulled Stolarz for an extra skater, and Holmberg took full advantage, ensuring the Leafs had a fighting chance.

In what became a defining moment of the game, Marner was then seen racing in on a breakaway and slipping the puck past Jeremy Swayman, managing to bag Toronto’s sixth victory in seven games.

Bruins’ Fourth Loss in a Row

Tuesday evening’s loss marked Boston’s fourth in a row, adding more fuel to the fire and putting extra pressure on the squad as the NHL trade deadline is getting near.

Bruins general manager Don Sweeney faces the critical decision of whether he should make moves to strengthen the squad or ride out the struggles as his squad keeps teetering on the edge of a wild-card spot.

Pastrnak continues his impressive streak, tallying 13 goals and 17 assists over the last 15 games.

However, he remains far from Bronco Horvath’s franchise record of 22 consecutive games with a point, set between December 1959 and February 1960.

Up next for both teams in the NHL, the Maple Leafs will travel to New York to take on the Rangers on Friday, while the Bruins return home to face the Islanders on Thursday, hoping to break out of their slump.
