Roger Federer Hoping The Australian Open Will Be His 20Th Grand Slam Title

Roger FedererRoger Federer, who is, when head to head against Marin Cilic, will be heading to the Australian Open final as the favourite to win. Cilic, for his part, is hoping not to see another loss to Federal as he did in final at Wimbledon last year.

Federer, who will be participating in his 30th final in a major has yet to lose a set in the last six played, and that has not gone unnoticed by Cilic. While Hyeon Chung and Kyle Edmund shook things up a little, this year’s final will be players by two of tennis’s most experienced players.

Federer, who is playing his seventh Aussie Open, is hoping to walk away with his sixth title, yet, for Cilic, being the first from his country to play a final in Australia, pride will follow him home whether he is successful or not.

For Federer, who beat the Croatian at last year’s final at Wimbledon, it is a good time for sports punters to get bets in with leading tennis sportsbetting sites before Sunday’s game, scheduled for 7:30 Aus time.

“We saw it against Rafa, we saw it again against Edmund. He brings power, he brings everything”

Continuing, the Swede commented,

“Not having a brutal semi-final, he’ll have rest and we’ll see a different Marin Cilic this time. I’m excited to play him.”

The last time Federer and Cilic met was during the London ATP Finals last year in a match that saw Federer dominate the Croatian winning is three straight sets.

Cilic wants more than revenge who has only ever won against Federer in the U.S Open finals, his first and only Grand Slam title. Commenting Cilic stated,

“I am not looking at it as revenge. It was on me that I couldn’t give my best in Wimbledon and that happens even with Rafa towards the end of the match and with Kyle – he had a small injury or fatigue towards the end of the match – those things happen.

When asked about going to the final, Cilic added,

“For me, it’s great to again be in the final, I give myself another opportunity to win a Grand Slam, I am playing really good tennis.

Cilic feels his performance has improved and he is playing well and consistent. He struggled to maintain the level of play needed to play Grand Slam level tennis for a long period but feels his conditioning has been improved and is no longer a concern.

Federer has not won a major title since his Wimbledon win in 2012. The beginning of the 2017 season saw the Swede that his hopes of winning twenty Gram Slam titles was diminishing.
Said Federer,

“Seriously, no. I wouldn’t be thinking this way. I know how hard it is to win on the clay, I know how hard it is to win any major for that matter. It just doesn’t come around very easily.

He continued adding,

“Plus I was fighting for so many years with Novak and Rafa and other great players – that blocked it for me for a while. I don’t want to say I gave up hope – I was going to be happy if I won one more major before I retired, but here we are. Two more, maybe a third. One match away, let’s see what happens.”
