The Ottawa Charge thrilled their home crowd with a dramatic 3-2 comeback win over the Toronto Sceptres in Professional Women’s Hockey League (PWHL) action on Tuesday night.

Ottawa Turned the Tide in the Third Period

The Ottawa Charge (1-0-1-0) started strong but began to stutter in the second period, a recurring issue from last season, allowing the Toronto Sceptres (1-0-0-1) to seize the momentum.

Toronto, fresh off a 3-1 season-opening victory against the Boston Fleet, managed to capitalize on their opponents’ struggles and took the lead.

However, a determined Ottawa squad turned the tide in the third, scoring twice in just over three minutes to claim victory.

Goaltender Emerance Maschmeyer, with 20 saves, played a crucial role in fending off Toronto’s late-game push.

The game began with an early goal from Ottawa’s Mannon McMahon, energizing the home fans.

But Toronto responded on the power play when Sarah Nurse deflected a Hannah Miller shot past Maschmeyer to even the score.

The Sceptres pulled ahead late in the second period when Izzy Daniel pounced on a loose puck, sending it across the goal line.

Ottawa came alive in the third period, igniting the arena. The Charge equalized on a power-play opportunity when Jincy Roese fired a shot through traffic, netting her first PWHL career goal.

Just moments later, Katerina Mrazova connected with Tereza Vanisova, who redirected a high shot past Toronto’s Kristen Campbell, who finished the night with 28 saves.

Game Takeaways and Future Games

Despite their ongoing offseason efforts to improve their physicality and enhance their size, the Charge were often outmuscled in front of their own net.

Their revitalized roster, fresh identity, and redefined mentality promoted by coach Carla MacLeod are yet to address their weaknesses, which is mandatory to move forward.

On the other hand, the Sceptres were not able to keep up with Ottawa’s energy surge after they tied the game.

The team coached by Troy Ryan struggled to contain their opponent in the third period.

Jincy Roese’s game-tying goal marked her first career tally in the PWHL, a memorable milestone for the rookie.

Up next, the Sceptres will host the Minnesota Frost on Saturday. The Charge will take on the Montreal Victoire at the Canadian Tire Centre on Friday night in their home debut.
