  • Marie-Philip Poulin leads the Montréal Victoire to a 4-1 win over the Ottawa Charge in the PWHL.
  • Montréal trailed 1-0 following a slow first period, and Poulin tied in with a powerful one-timer in the second.
  • Victoire’s captain scored two more and completed a hat trick.

Marie-Philip Poulin’s meticulous work on her shot paid off Wednesday night, leading the Montréal Victoire who had a shock defeat at the beginning of the month to a 4-1 victory over the Ottawa Charge in the Professional Women’s Hockey League (PWHL).

Head Coach Cheverie: “That Goal Turned the Tides of the Entire Game”

After a sluggish first period, Montréal trailed 1-0, and their captain turned the tide early in the second.

The 33-year-old born in Beauceville unleashed a blistering one-timer to tie the game, igniting her team’s momentum.

From there on, she was hard to stop, netting two more goals to complete a hat trick that secured victory for her team.

Head coach Kori Cheverie commented,

That goal turned the tides of the entire game, Pou has the ability to do that, and I’m glad she shot that puck that hard. I’m really happy that all that one-timer work she puts in at the end of practice came to fruition tonight.

Poulin’s equalizer came moments after Ottawa’s Emily Clark narrowly missed extending the lead, hitting the post on a breakaway.

Gardiner: “When She’s Teed Up, It’s Probably Going In.”

On the counterattack, Jennifer Gardiner fed Poulin during a 2-on-1. The crowd at Place Bell erupted as the puck hit the crossbar and went in. The 23-year-old from Surrey joked,

I asked if there was a shot clock in the net for that one, I don’t think anybody saw it, we just heard it and knew it went in. When she’s teed up, it’s probably going in.

Montréal (7-2-1-2) surged into first place in the six-team PWHL standings despite playing three fewer games than Minnesota. Poulin also took over as the league’s top scorer with eight goals.

Gardiner, who contributed a goal and two assists, has been thriving on Montréal’s top line alongside Poulin and Abigail Boreen, who has stepped in for injured alternate captain Laura Stacey.

I’ve just got to try to keep up out there. Obviously, she’s the best player in the world”, said Gardiner, who will soon represent Canada in the Rivalry Series against the U.S. “It takes your best every single night.

Poulin, a three-time Olympic gold medalist, praised her young linemate’s skill.

Honestly, I also have to be at my best, She’s young, she’s fast, she’s skilled. It’s an honour to play with her and see her grow. I hope she can learn from me, but I’m learning from her too.

After a slow start to the season with just three points in seven games, Marie-Philip Poulin has caught fire, tallying six goals and one assist in her last five outings.

Just trying to keep my head down and go to work, Effort, day in and day out, and at some point it’s going to go in
