Mick Schumacher Second fastest During Ferrari F1 Testing Debut

Mick Schumpeter leaves the drivers area and prepares to begin testing on Tuesday with Ferrari

Twelve years after theF1 legend Michael Schumacher last drove a Ferrari in an F1 race, his son Mick might join the team and continue the families legacy.

On Tuesday, Mick Schumacher was in Sakhir, Bahrain to test for Ferrari on Tuesday and managed to post the second fastest time during the afternoon session. Schumacher, who is now 20 wad posted a lap time of 1 minute, 29.976 seconds and that was, for a while, the fastest lap of the day before Max Verstappen posted a time 0.597 seconds faster.

The only two drivers to run more test laps than Schumacher was Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen. Schumacher ran 56 laps. Schumacher’s performance will defiantly illicit excitement from fans of his father and Ferrari with the hopes they will once again see a Schumacher behind the wheel.

Five of Michael Schumacher’s F1 titles were when he drove with Ferrari. At 50, Michael still maintains the record with 91 wins as a F1 driver and few will come close however Hamilton, depending on how long he remains in the sport, has a shot with 71 wins under his belt.

Despite the family history, Mick seemed calm going into testing and was seen smiling upon arrival at the Ferrari garage and as he headed out onto the track for the first time while his mother Corinna looked on.

The morning session saw Schumacher posting the sixth fastest time at 1.32.552 after 30 laps. Last year, Schumacher won the F3 European Championship and is now competing for Prema Racing in F2. In the first two races of the F2 season, Mick finished in eighth and sixth.

There is some speculation, if this season goes well for him that Mick could be driving in F1 by 2020. He is currently part of the driver academy at Ferrari, as was Charles Leclerc, now a member of its F1 team after he drove for a year with Alfa Romeo Sauber.

Mick’s father, Michael Schumacher last drove in F1 in October 22, 2006 at the Brazilian Grand Prix in Interlagos, Brazil. He retired shortly after but made a return in 2010 with Mercedes and drove for three more seasons. In 2013, Michael Schumacher was on holiday with his family when he fell on the slopes and his head came into contact with a rock resulting in his helmet splitting open. The result saw the former F1 champion devolving blood clots on his brain, and while doctors were able to remove most, some remained due to how deep there were within his brain.

After surgery, doctors placed Schumacher in a drug-induced coma that he did recover from but has not been able to make a full recovery. Details on his condition and current state are closely guarded and as a result, knowledge is limited other than he remains at his home by Lake Geneva in Switzerland and received private care.
