  • In women’s singles, Badosa defeated third seed Gauff 7-5, 6-4 in the QFs.

Gabriela Dabrowski and New Zealander Erin Routliffe have made it into the Australian Open semifinals with a top performance in the women’s doubles quarterfinals.

The second-seeded duo defeated Japan’s Miyu Kato and Mexico’s Renata Zarazua 6-3, 6-2 in a match that was once again a testament to their precision hits and efficiency.

First Match Won in Straight Sets

The victory on Margaret Court Arena at Melbourne Park also marked the first time in the tournament that Routliffe and Dabrowski won a match in straight sets, having previously battled from behind in earlier rounds.

The 32-year-old from Ottawa, Ontario and her 29-year-old Auckland-born partner recorded two aces, three double faults, and zero unforced errors

They scored 27 points on return and 35 on serve. Their second-serve success rate was a key factor in their victory: They won 57% of those points compared to just 20% for their opponents, Kato and Zarazua.

The duo also capitalized on break opportunities, converting five out of seven and claiming five return games in total.

In the semifinals, they will meet the third-seeded combo of Jelena Ostapenko of Latvia and Su-Wei Hsieh of Taiwan.

On Monday, the Latvian-Taiwanese duo defeated Elena-Gabriela Ruse of Romania and Marta Kostyuk of Ukraine 6-2, 5-7, 7-5.

Coco Gauff Loses to Paula Badosa

In other news, Paula Badosa defeated third seed Coco Gauff 7-5, 6-4 in the women’s singles quarterfinals.

The result sent Badosa into her first Grand Slam semifinal, an important milestone she celebrated with visible emotion.

A year ago, the 27-year-old born in Manhattan, New York, was forced to withdraw from the Australian Open because of a career-threatening back injury.

Reflecting on her achievement, the 11th seed said,

I’m a bit emotional, as you know, I’m a very emotional person.

Her determination was evident on Rod Laver Arena as she played her best tennis, dictating rallies and targeting Gauff’s vulnerable forehand.

The last Slams, the quarter-finals were very tough, so today I wanted to play my best game. I think I did it … I’m super proud of the level I gave today

Badosa said after clinching the match with her 15th winner.

Gauff struggled throughout, committing 28 unforced errors on her forehand and faltering on key points

The 20-year-old American’s serve also proved fragile, especially in the critical moments of the second set.

Badosa is now waiting for the semifinal clash against either double-defending champion Aryna Sabalenka or No. 27 Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova.
