Del Potro defeated John Isner in U.S. Open Quarterfinals

Juan Martin del Potro returns serve against John Isner on his way to winning and advancing to the U.S. Open semifinals

As the quarterfinal match between John Isner and Juan Del Potro played, he looked like Isner wanted to be anywhere, but thereafter he continued to fall further behind on a blistering hot day that was sapping the energy levels of both players.

Isner was trying to make the semifinals and become the first American player in over twelve years to be one of the final four still standing at the U.S. Open. However, that dream failed to become a reality at the Arthur Ashe Stadium after Isner lost to Argentinian Del Potro in four sets (6-7, 6-3, 7-6, 6-2).

The heat has been a major issue at this year’s U.S. Open, with temperatures soaring over 90 degrees on Tuesday. It made playing uncomfortable, to say the least, add in the, and it was outright miserable. That heat impacted Isner as it did the night before when Federer was playing John Millman. However, Del Potro being from Argentina faired better and did not experience the same level of discomfort.

The heat reached such uncomfortable temperatures that tournament official’s suspended play in the afternoon during the junior matches. The new policy relating to extreme heat conditions allows male players to have an extra 10-minute break after the third set completion however it seemed to do little to help Isner regain strength and quickly went down three games in the fourth set.

This season has been a good one for Isner who has won two titles on the hard-court and made a strong challenge at Wimbledon this year making to the semifinals. Isner also did well in New York making it to the quarterfinals. However, when it comes to the U.S. Open, there have been no Americans players who have advanced beyond quarterfinals since 2006 when Andy Roddick won the championship.

U.S. Open

Del Potro gave Isner all sorts of problems, and for betters, that is important information to remember for future matches that has del Potro and Isner paired against each other. Of course, with the U.S. Open in full swing and the semifinals just days away, it is a rip opportunity to place bets on the semis with one of our recommended top Canadian tennis betting sites, such as 888Sports, and with up to $250 availalbe as a sign-up bonus, the opportunites are endless.

Del Potro has an imposing serve that almost equals that of Isner. However, del Potro’s returns and forehand were too much for Isner to handle, especially considering Del Porto is known for forehand returns at over 100 mph.

The main advantage Isner had over the Argentian was the hometown crowd. It was Del Potro who the crowd seemed to be behind with many sporting Argentinian jerseys and waving blue and white flags while shouting “delPo”.

Those chants and the clapping were a constant whenever del Potro scored a major point or eliminated Isner’s chance of breaking set. Yet, Isner was the one to first pounce during the opening match tiebreaker with a 123 mph serve. I gave Isner the false hope after winning the first set only to watch as del Potro won the second, third and fourth sets.

Del Potro will now face either Dominic Thiem or Rafael Nadal in the semifinals on Friday. For punters, this is when things heat up at the U.S. Open and is the ideal time to get in your bets with top-rated tennis sports betting sites.
