Cowboys Owner Could Sue The NFL If Goodell Gets Extension

Jerry Jones and Roger GoodellInside sources in the NFL shared information to the Associated Press on November 8 and stated that Jerry Jones, the owner of the Dallas Cowboys is not happy over the fact that the NFL wants to extend Commissioner Roger Goodell’s contract and has threatened to hit the league with a lawsuit should it proceed with a contract extension. The team owner and executive who leaked this news wanted to remain anonymous because nothing official has been released at the moment but similar rumours has also been reported by the New York Times.

Back in May, the 32 owners of NFL teams voted in favour of extending Goodell’s contract and making changes to his compensation structure but it looks like Jones who is one of the most powerful owners in the NFL has had a change of heart and it looks like the main reason for this is the Commissioner’s decision to suspend Ezekiel Elliot’s for six games.

Elliot who plays for the Cowboys was arrested on domestic violence charges, which he denied under oath. Prosecutors in the end decided not to pursue the charges due to conflicting evidence but the NFL did not turn a blind eye to it and conducted an investigation of their own which lasted for close to 12 months. The Commissioner then decided to suspend Elliot and the decision did not go down well with the Cowboys.

Jones gave us an indication in October that he may not go along with a new contract extension for the commissioner as he felt that Goodell had made decisions in recent times that lacked consistency. One of those decisions was another case of domestic violence which happened before the Elliot incident.

Ray Rice who played for the Baltimore Ravens was also accused of domestic violence and Commissioner Goodell suspended him for two games initially. When a video emerged of Rice behaving extremely violently with his then finance, the NFL and Commissioner Goodell received a lot of criticism from fans for being too lenient with Rice’s two game suspensions.

Jones suspects that Goodell has tried to make up for that error by being too harsh on Elliot.

In a statement, Jones said

We make the commissioner in the NFL the most powerful person that I know of as to the organization and it’s constituency, so it’s a big deal not only when we’re hiring, but when we extend him. So there’s a lot of consideration to it, and it shouldn’t surprise anybody
