Four-Point Night: McDavid Leads Oilers Past Winless Kings
Summary:
- The Edmonton Oilers captain Connor McDavid recorded a goal and three assists in their 4-1 victory against the Los Angeles Kings.
- McDavid took his season total to 16 points as Edmonton extended its winning streak to five games.
- Podkolzin Draisaitl scored twice, while Devon Levi made 39 saves.
Connor McDavid had an excellent game against the Los Angeles Kings on Tuesday, as the Edmonton Oilers defeated them 4-1.
The captain recorded a goal and three assists, helping his side boost its winning streak to five games while also handing the Kings yet another loss to open the season.
McDavid Set the Tone
The Oilers opened the scoring when McDavid drew Cody Ceci out of position before setting up Leon Draisaitl in the low slot.
Shortly after, McDavid accelerated past Mikey Anderson and fired a shot that Darcy Kuemper stopped, but Vasily Podkolzin collected the rebound and put Edmonton ahead 2-0.
Connor McDavid added his fourth goal of the season late in the first period. After the Kings had spent nearly two shifts pressuring Edmonton in its own zone, McDavid returned to the ice, collected a pass with his glove from Ty Emberson at the blue line and scored on the rush.
Kuemper was replaced by Anton Forsberg at the start of the second period.
Kings Still Searching for First Win
Los Angeles pulled one goal back late in the second when Brandt Clarke sent a long shot through traffic. It was Clarke’s first goal since signing a five-year, $37 million contract last June.
While the Kings managed to outshot Edmonton 40-16, they had a hard time turning their advantage into actual goals.
They fell to 0-3-2 under new head coach Peter Laviolette, leaving them and the Philadelphia Flyers as the NHL’s only winless teams.
Laviolette is looking to introduce a more aggressive offensive approach to a team that has relied on structured, defense-first hockey for much of the past two decades. Tuesday’s defeat showed the challenge of making that transition against an Edmonton side capable of punishing defensive mistakes.
Podkolzin completed the scoring with an empty-net goal, assisted by McDavid and Draisaitl.
The Oilers will return home Thursday to face the Utah Mammoth, while the Kings will host the Boston Bruins on Saturday as they continue their search for their first victory of the season.
