Hosting the Winter Olympic Games is an honour for any city as it puts it in the center of the global spotlight and also gives it the opportunity to earn heavily during the games. However, there is a tremendous amount of work, preparation and investment that goes into the hosting duties of the Winter Olympic Games.

Will Canada Host 2030 Winter Olympics?

The Canadian Olympic Committee (COC) is very keen on hosting the 2030 Winter Olympics in British Columbia (B.C). The COC has submitted a report to the Vancouver and Whistler city councils informing them that they would need an approximate budget of $4 billion to host the 2030 Winter Olympics. The COC has given the two city councils time till December 2022 to sign an agreement and confirm that they are willing to host the games.

Vancouver council officials have already admitted concern over the feasibility to host the 2030 Winter Olympics. The two main concerns that are causing a disagreement is that the Vancouver city council is not confident with the $4 billion budget proposal and has also stated that the December 2022 deadline to sign the agreement is too soon.

Vancouver city officials believe that they need more time to analyse the proposal submitted by the COC and look into the proposed budget. As a result, they have stated that it does not look likely that they will be able to agree in hosting the 2030 Winter Olympics. The COC disagrees with this view and states that there is enough time to raise the $4 billion budget that they would require.

Vancouver Locals Need To Vote On 2030 Winter Olympics

Colleen Hardwick, Vancouver Council says the right thing to do is to reinstate a motion that will allow the Council to put on the ballot the option for Vancouver to host the 2030 Winter Olympics and give the locals an opportunity to express their opinion. Hardwick wants the matter to be put on the ballot during the municipal election that takes place in Oct 2022.

Hardwick says that if the federal and provincial governments do not make and follow through with their financial commitments for the proposed $4 billion budget, the locals will be slapped with higher taxes as they will have to fund the proposed budget
