Henderson Sitting in Two Stokes Back from First Place at the CP Women’s Open

Brooke Henderson scored an early birdie on Thursday at the CP Women’s Open on Thursday and came out on a mission scoring six birdies on seven holes to finish the day 6 under-par and only two shots from first.

Henderson commented that the day turned out to be solid adding that,

“I got off to a little bit of a shaky start with a bogey on the first hole but I made a ton of birdies today and that’s always a really good sign.”

Three ladies managed to equal the course record in the first round. Ariya Jutanugarn from Thailand, Mariajo Uribe from Columbia and Nasa Hataoka from Japan each scored 64. Denmark’s Nanna Koerstz Madsen and Angel Yin (U.S.A) shot 63.

New Zealand’s Lydia Ko and Minjee Lee also scored 66 for the day, and Naomi Ko shot 68. The top 8 are all closely fielded together, but it was Mariajo Uribe who set the pace early by shotting one under the course record.

Commenting on her achievement, Uribe said,

“It’s nice to start with a bogey-free round to actually see my golf game getting to where I know it is, It’s going to be a good week.”

LPGA

Ariya Jutanugarn ranked second in the LPGA matched Uribe’s score an hour later after getting four birdies in a row and making only one error on the 16th hole. Jutanugarn stated that her goal for the day was not to focus on the future and what she shoots today but focus only on she can control.

The conditions yesterday were ideal, and several other players managed to score low, but the two that stood out the most was Brooke Henderson and Japan’s Nasa Hataoka. Both took advantage of the fast firm greens, the sunshine and light breeze that drifted by the course.

Henderson had a few struggles putting on the 11th and 12th holes but joining a group that included Anna Nordqvist and Sung Hyun Park, she managed to move up on the leaderboard after scoring back-to-back birdies and shot par on the 17th after dropping the ball into the sand.

What is clear is that Henderson seems on top of her game this season. Hailing from Smith Falls, Ontario, she could easily be in the hunt to win the tournament, and for golf sports betting sites, she continually is awarded favourable odds. Thursday may have been ideal for playing, but was a hot one, and Friday’s forecast is calling for another day of hot temperatures and increased winds. Commenting, Henderson feels the course is designed to be windy adding,

“I think some holes can kind of play in your favour that way. It’s just going to be a challenge for the whole field. Hopefully I still hit the ball in good places, give myself a lot of birdie looks and hopefully capitalize.”

One surprise was that both Anna Nordqvist and Sung Hyun Park were behind in the field. Both Park and Nordqvist shot 2 under-par for the day. Canadians Anne-Catherine Tanguay, Maude-Aimee LeBlanc and Anne-Catherine Tanguay scored 71. There are sixteen Canadian ladies in the field all vying for part of the US$2.25 million prize pool.

How Henderson will fare as day two gets underway tomorrow will be seen. While Henderson has been having a solid year so far, she is facing a strong list of ladies and a leaderboard that will see many battles before the final round on Sunday.
