Monday’s footballing festivities start with Cameroon vs Serbia at Al Janoub Stadium in the city of Al Wakrah.

This is a huge game for both teams. The Cameroonians, despite delivering something of a spirited first-half performance against the Swiss, ultimately failed to impress on match-day one, and they now need to do better, especially in the final third.

Much of the same can be said for the Serbians, who found Brazil far too much to handle the first time out. The positive for them is that their hardest game is out of the way, which is not something that can be said for Monday’s opponents.

Sure, Serbia struggled to contain what is a very strong Brazilian team in their first game, but they’ll definitely fancy their chances here. Prior to landing in Qatar, they’d won three on the bounce beating decent opposition such as Sweden and Norway and doing so in convincing fashion. This is a team that is generally hard to beat, while they have many offensive qualities too.

Unfortunately, offensive quality isn’t really something that Cameroon have much of, as we saw against Switzerland in the Group G opener. The African side has now gone five games without scoring more than a single goal, and they’ve failed to find the net in three of those five.
It’s also worrying that they conceded lots of chances on match-day one, but for some outstanding saves from goalkeeper Andre Onana and some poor finishing from the Swiss forwards, their defeat would’ve been far heavier.

Serbia are expected to win this one, and with the likes of Mitrovic and Vlahovic to call on up top, they should win it well. Bettors can profit by betting on ‘Serbia to Win & Over 1.5 Goals’. After all, this Serbian team has scored two or more in four of the last five.

South Korea vs Ghana

In a massive game for both, South Korea will play Ghana at Education City Stadium in A Rayyan.

There were plenty of promising moments created by South Korea in their opening game against Uruguay, and they likely wouldn’t have been disappointed with a share of the spoils, though they may have left the pitch thinking that they could’ve had far more if only Ui-Jo Hwang had converted what was a gilt-edged chance in the first half.

When the talismanic Andre Ayew scored a 73rd-minute equalizer against Portugal, the Ghanaians must’ve thought they’d earned themselves a point in their opening game, but their defensive limitations were well and truly exposed during the final 15 minutes of the game, and that’s worrying ahead of a game against a Korean side that certainly create chances.

Both Ghana and South Korea will fancy their chances here, but it is the South Koreans who created the better impression on match-day one. They looked far more disciplined and organized than Monday’s opponents, especially without the ball, and that could be the difference here.

At odds of 2.65, the South Koreans look like a good bet. They’ve now kept three clean sheets in a row and have only lost one of their last ten. During that time, they’ve beaten some relatively useful opposition too, getting the better of Chile, Egypt and Cameroon. Their recent 1-0 win against the latter suggests that they could have enough in the tank to see off a Ghana side that lacks defensive solidity.

Brazil vs Switzerland

The third game of the day sees something of a heavyweight clash between Brazil and Switzerland take place at Stadium 974 in Doha.

The Brazilians did exactly what they were expected to on match-day one, and that was to win convincingly. They were by far the better team, they controlled proceedings, and they found a few pieces of final-third quality when it mattered most. Crucially, they did all of that against a very solid Serbian team.

The Swiss were impressive too. Sure, it took them a while to come to the boil against Cameroon, and in the first half, they were a little subdued. They were seemingly happy to keep their opponents at arms length for a while, but from the first whistle in the second half, they took control. They never looked in danger of failing to win, they showed lots of quality on the ball, and their passing was purposeful and creative, though their finishing needs some work, especially if they’re going to trouble this Brazil side.

This is an interesting encounter, as the Swiss really do know how to play in big games. They’ll be disciplined, and they’ll look to keep things tight. Such an approach has paid dividends in recent times, as it allowed them to grind out wins against both Spain and Portugal in the UEFA Nations League a few months back, so we really shouldn’t expect Brazil to have it all their own way here, despite what the odds suggest.

The bet that catches the eye is ‘Under 2.5 Goals’. We know that this Brazil team rarely concedes goals, they’ve conceded in just three of their last eight, conceding more than once at no point during that time. On top of this, we know that the Swiss will look to sit back and contain, and they can do that well, so things probably won’t be too entertaining, especially early on. A common theme at this World Cup it seems.

Four of Switzerland’s last six have seen less than three goals go in, and in these big games, they tend to keep the score down. In the last 18 months or so, they’ve been involved in a 1-0 loss to Spain, a 1-0 win to Portugal, a 1-1 draw with Italy and a 0-0 draw with Italy, so they know how to keep things steady.

Uruguay vs Portugal

The final game on Monday sees Uruguay take on Portugal at Lusail Iconic Stadium in Lusail.

Portugal got away with it in their first game somewhat. Of course, we saw them produce the offensive quality that we know they’ve got, often in droves, but they were sloppy at the back, which could easily have cost them.

Uruguay were typically resolute against the South Koreans, they defended strongly, and they were industrious going forward, though they failed to hit the target with any of their ten attempts at goal, which is worrying.

There’s a definite feeling that the Uruguayans might be lacking offensively. Luis Suarez is nothing like the deadly striker he once was, while Darwin Nunez, for all his industry and tenacious play, didn’t really trouble the South Korean keeper last time out. In fact, it’s hard to see where regular goals are coming from with this side.

In contrast, the Portuguese have a whole host of attacking players that look likely to produce the goods offensively, as we saw on match-day one. That’s probably why they are quite heavily favoured in the betting ahead of this one.

The Uruguayans can certainly make life hard for their opponents, and they’re not easy to beat, but their lack of goals is a worry. They’ve now failed to score in three of their last five, and it was a lack of forward power that saw them lose 1-0 to Iran in late September.

The bet that stands out is ‘Portugal to Win & Under 3.5 Goals’. Yes, things got a bit hectic against Ghana, but that’s not really how Portugal want to play, while their opponents here will be nowhere near as open, which is why only one of their last eight games has contained more than three goals.

We’re likely to witness a really tight game in Lusail, but with their extra goal-scoring quality, the 2016 European champions can edge it.
