If you’re betting on sports, then the chances are you’ve placed a few Over/Under bets. Such bets are not sport specific and are popular among Canadian sports bettors that like to bet on something other than the result of a match.

Betting on over or under in a sports game means that bettors are not concerned with the result. Instead, they are betting on occurrences within a sports game, such as points, goals, touchdowns and so on.

What is Under/Over betting?

As touched on above, betting on over or under has little to do with the result. It’s not like betting on a team or a competitor to win. Rather than betting on the result, you bet on whether there will or won’t be a certain number of goals scored in an NHL game

So, what is under/over betting exactly? For those who don’t know or those who are new to sports betting, over/under betting essentially involves betting on more or less than something. What that something is depends on the sport.

For example, in an NFL game, it might be over or under a certain number of points to be scored or over/under a certain number of touchdowns. In soccer, it’s going to be more or less than a certain number of goals, or corners, of cards.

Under/Over betting examples

Here is a classic over/under betting example.

Let’s say there’s a Major League Soccer fixture between the Vancouver Whitecaps and Toronto FC.

In soccer, when it comes to over/under, the line is usually set at 2.5, so you can choose to bet on ‘Over 2.5 Goals’ or ‘Under 2.5 Goals’.

Let’s say you bet on ‘Over 2.5 Goals’. For this bet to win, three or more goals need to be scored in the game. If less than three goals are scored, you will lose the bet.

Conversely, if you bet on ‘Under 2.5 Goals’ and the game ends 2-1 to Toronto FC, your bet goes down as a losing one. To win an ‘Under 2.5 Goals’ bet, the game needs to finish with less than three goals having been scored.

Another example could be Major League Baseball, which is hugely popular among over/under bettors, especially those living in Canada and the US.

Let’s say there’s a game between the Toronto Blue Jays and the Chicago White Sox. The line is set at 11.5, which means you can select whether to bet on ‘Over 11.5 Runs’ or ‘Under 11.5 Runs’.

If you bet on ‘Over 11.5 Runs’, the game needs to contain a total of at least 12 runs for the bet to go down as a winning one.

If you bet on ‘Under 11.5 Runs’, then 11 or fewer runs need to be scored for you to get a positive return.
