All 10 gold medals came from the same athletes who &#8220;<em>had a really good mix of new and more veteran athletes<\/em>\u201d performing on the \u201c<em>highest stage<\/em>&#8220;, as CPC chief sport officer <strong>Catherine Gosselin-Despres<\/strong> commented.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Parksville, B.C.\u2019s 20-year-old swimmer <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/nicholas.bennett_\/\">Nicholas Bennett<\/a><\/strong> brought home two gold and one silver.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;<em>I&#8217;m going to dream of these memories every night probably for the rest of my life<\/em>&#8220;, he said, while comparing the Tokyo Games that were held without spectators where \u201c<em>you could hear a pin dro<\/em>p\u201d to the loud atmosphere in Paris where the swimmer \u201c<em>could barely hear<\/em>\u201d his thoughts.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bennet was chosen to carry Canada\u2019s flag at the closing ceremony, together with Ottawa\u2019s para canoeist <strong>Brianna Hennessy<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The 39-year-old won the country\u2019s first-ever Paralympic medal in canoeing with a silver, and commented on the &#8220;<em>evolution of para sport across the world<\/em>&#8221; and the fact that they were representing \u201c<em>the movement of people with disabilities<\/em>\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The women&#8217;s sitting volleyball team won bronze, once again marking a first for Canada in a team sport since the London Games in 2012.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"equal-bonuses-for-paralympians-and-olympians\">Equal Bonuses for Paralympians and Olympians<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>While the COVID-19 pandemic severely affected para sport and the country\u2019s tight restrictions added an extra layer of challenge for Tokyo hopefuls, this year\u2019s Paralympics proved just what they could do with more optimal preparation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Canadian Paralympic Committee chief executive officer <strong>Karen O&#8217;Neill<\/strong> called their performance &#8220;<em>a bit of a bounce forward<\/em>\u201d, and a &#8220;<em>crossroads for Canada<\/em>\u201d given their intention to <em>\u201cstop the downturn<\/em>\u201d of their \u201c<em>reduced performance<\/em>\u201d.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Paris also marked the first time the country\u2019s <strong>Paralympians will be rewarded with the same bonuses as their Olympic counterparts<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Namely, they will receive $20,000 for a gold medal, $15,000 for a silver medal, and $10,000 for a bronze one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/paralympic.ca\">Canadian Paralympic Committee<\/a> will pay athletes out of an $8-million endowment fund<\/strong>. Health tech entrepreneur <strong>Sanjay Malaviya donated $4 million to the fund<\/strong> while the federal government followed suit with $2 million.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Malaviya has also decided to
