{"id":8749,"date":"2023-02-01T05:44:00","date_gmt":"2023-02-01T10:44:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.betting.ca\/news\/?p=8749"},"modified":"2023-02-01T05:44:00","modified_gmt":"2023-02-01T05:44:00","slug":"olympians-call-for-gymnastics-canada-leadership-to-resign","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.betting.ca\/news\/olympians-call-for-gymnastics-canada-leadership-to-resign","title":{"rendered":"Olympians Call For Gymnastics Canada Leadership To Resign"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.betting.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/02\/ian-moss-and-jeffery-thomson.jpg\" alt=\"Ian Moss and Jeffery Thomson\" class=\"wp-image-8752\" width=\"285\" height=\"188\" title=\"Olympians Call For Gymnastics Canada Leadership To Resign\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Summary<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Three of Canada\u2019s top gymnasts write letter to Gymnastics Canada<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>They want the board Chairman and CEO to resign from their posts<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Senior leaders accused of not doing enough to stop toxic culture&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gymnastics Canada CEO <strong>Ian Moss<\/strong> appeared before the House of Commons earlier this week to give evidence of why he did not do sack controversial coach <strong>Alex Bard <\/strong>when they were numerous allegations made of his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.betting.ca\/news\/canadian-gymnasts-urge-sports-minister-for-probe-into-child-abuse-allegations\">inappropriate behaviour with young Canadian female gymnasts<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While Moss was providing evidence at the House of Commons, three of Canada\u2019s top gymnasts (<strong>Ellie Black, Rosie MacLennan and Kyle Shewfelt<\/strong>) wrote a letter to the board of directors at Gymnastics Canada and called for Moss and Chairman <strong>Jeffery Thomson<\/strong> to resign immediately.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"new-leadership-required-to-bring-in-change\"><strong>New Leadership Required To Bring In Change<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ellie Black is a three time <a href=\"https:\/\/www.betting.ca\/live\">Olympic<\/a> gymnast and a world champion, Rosie MacLennan was the trampoline champion during the 2016 and 2012 Olympics while Kyle Shewfelt won gold during the 2004 Olympics.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Their letter says that based on how Moss and Thomson have handled complaints, they have no faith in their leadership anymore and <strong>want the board to take immediate action and remove them from the leadership team<\/strong>. The letter goes on to encourage the board to <strong>bring in new leadership and change at Gymnastics Canada<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These three champions are not the only one calling for change at Gymnastics Canada! <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gymnastsforchange.com\">Gymnasts for Change Canada<\/a>, an organization that focuses on stopping abuse in gymnastics had earlier published a letter signed by 500 Canadian athletes calling for a third party investigation into Gymnastics Canada.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bard was the former national coach for Team Canada and spent nearly 30 years in the organization. He fostered a culture of kissing his young female gymnasts, was accused of being abuse towards female coaches and inappropriately touching his students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Many young gymnasts and some coaches were allegedly terrified of saying anything to Bard due to his position and seniority in Gymnastics Canada.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Athletes speak out on the toxic culture of abuse in Canadian gymnastics | W5 INVESTIGATION\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/_BpTacY_UHY?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"moss-explains-why-bard-was-not-sacked-immediately\"><strong>Moss Explains Why Bard Was Not Sacked Immediately&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Moss has been CEO since 2018 and Bard was eventually fired in 2019! Moss has been under a lot of pressure to explain his delay in taking action and removing Bard.
