Lewis Hamilton saluting media will start 11th on the grid on Sunday’s Turkish Grand Prix in Istanbul.<\/p><\/div>\n

After winning pole position for the Turkish Grand Prix on Sunday ahead of rival Max Verstappen and teammate, Lewis Hamilton was slapped with a 10 place grid penalty and dropped down to 11th on the grid.<\/p>\n

The 10 grid penalty was in response to Hamilton and Mercedes exceeding F1 rules that allow for a maximum of three combustion engines per season. While the penalty was unwelcomed news for Hamilton as he battles Max Verstappen<\/a> for the drivers championship, teammate Valtteri Bottas now takes over the pole position, while Verstappen starts in second.<\/p>\n

During Saturday’s qualifying session for the Turkish Grand Prix<\/a>, Hamilton finished with a time of 1:25.565, .13 seconds ahead of teammate Valtteri Bottas and .33 ahead of Max Verstappen, who recorded a time of 1:24.592. Charles Leclerc and Pierre Gasly took fourth and fifth, while Fernando Alonso, Sergio Perez, Lando Norris, Canadian Lance Stroll and Yuki Tsunoda start in the remaining top 10 grid position.<\/p>\n

The penalty against Hamilton for this years Turkish Grand Prix puts Verstappen in a strong position to eliminate Hamilton’s two-point lead in the drivers’ championship and retake the lead. With only six races remaining and only a few points separating Hamilton and Verstappen, bookmakers are expecting the drivers’ championship to go to the wire.<\/p>\n

Hamilton will now have hope he can catch up to Verstappen, who has had some superb starts this season. However, the Dutch driver will have to contend with Bottas if he is to get his 18th F1 career win at Istanbul Park Circuit.<\/p>\n

“I hope for a clean getaway but starting on the inside will be tricky. There is very low grip in both dry and wet conditions compared to the outside. We’ll try everything we can to keep the Mercedes behind but it’s not going to be easy, they’ve had great pace all weekend.”<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
