{"id":1389,"date":"2017-08-18T11:52:49","date_gmt":"2017-08-18T11:52:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.betting.ca\/news\/?p=1389"},"modified":"2017-08-18T11:52:49","modified_gmt":"2017-08-18T11:52:49","slug":"canada-launches-team-up-speak-up-athlete-concussion-program","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.betting.ca\/news\/canada-launches-team-up-speak-up-athlete-concussion-program","title":{"rendered":"Canada Launches \u2018Team Up &#8211; Speak Up\u2019 Athlete Concussion Program"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.betting.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2017\/08\/team-up-speak-up.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-1392\" \/>The United States launched the <a href=\"https:\/\/concussionfoundation.org\/programs\/team-up-speak-up\">\u2018<em>Team Up &#8211; Speak Up<\/em>\u2019 Program in 2016<\/a> in an effort to educate athletes who participate in contact sports about the dangers of covering up concussions and the ramifications of concussion related injuries.<\/p>\n<p>Top sporting organizations such as <strong>USA <a href=\"https:\/\/www.betting.ca\/hockey-betting\">Hockey<\/a>, Major League Lacrosse, American Hockey Coaches Association, NASCAR, National Federations of State High School Associations and USA Rugby<\/strong> joined the program which was rolled out across 47 states.<\/p>\n<p>After seeing the success of the program in America, Canada has decided to launch the \u2018<em>Team Up &#8211; Speak Up<\/em>\u2019 Program across the country and the <strong>Concussion Legacy Foundation Canada<\/strong> will play a major role in implementing the program. <\/p>\n<p>The concept of the program is very simple \u2013 to get coaches, team captains and medical coaching personnel to spend one minute before each game to educate team members on being able to identify a concussion related injury, not cover it up and report it immediately to the coach or medical staff.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Concussion Legacy Foundation<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/PfvWN32dyH0\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The goal is to have every athlete in Canada hear the one minute speech before September 12. The one minute speech addresses three simple but crucial points. The first point is that as team mates, each one looks out for the other. The second states that if a team mate suffers a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/traumaticbraininjury\/get_the_facts.html\">concussion<\/a>, they immediately need help and the third is the coach and captain wants team members to report any concussion related injury without delay.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement, <strong>Chris Nowinski<\/strong>, co-founder of Concussion Legacy Foundation said <\/p>\n<blockquote><p>You\u2019re changing the social norm from, \u2018Hey, we\u2019re supposed to be hiding concussions\u2019 \u2026 to \u2018You\u2019re actually supposed to look out for your teammates. We\u2019re framing the idea of identifying concussions as being a good teammate. That\u2019s why it\u2019s called Team Up Speak Up<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The program looks to break the old cycle of players hiding their head injuries and playing through the pain in an effort to be \u2018<em>tough<\/em>\u2019. The program also puts the emphasis on parents and asks them to educate their children who are involved in contact sports, as it is very difficult for a minor to be able to identify a concussion related injury suffered on the field.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rugbycanada.ca\/\">Rugby Canada<\/a> became the first organization in the country to join the program.
